Human nature is biological, and just like any other animal, throughout our evolutionary history, we have grown adapted to environments that surrounded us. 99% of our evolutionary times were out in the wild, surrounded by predators and dangers. Humans didn’t evolve adaptations to fly, unlike birds for example, but we developed different set of adaptations that helped us survive.
In the process of natural selection and sexual selection, humans developed abilities to communicate, think logically and be conscious of ourselves. Unlike most other animals, humans are aware of their thoughts and emotions. To a degree, we can alter our actions based on our conscious decisions. Yet, still about 90% of our lives is driven on autopilot.
We crave food, because it gives us energy. We crave beauty, because it is an indicator of a strong immune system, and youth is desired because it gives higher chances of longer life. It is our genes that drive us to find those things attractive, and the ultimate goal of genes is to replicate themselves.
Because of different roles in reproduction, men and women grew attraction to different traits. Women seek strong, dominant men with high social status, and men seek young, kind and beautiful women.
Next time you are attracted to a charming person or feel angry when someone insults you, pay attention to those emotions, as they are programs our bodies and brains use to guide us in survival.
