To understand humanity as it is now, we have to take a closer look at where we came from. Modern technological inventions of DNA tests and fMRI brain scans allowed us to paint a clear picture of our evolutionary past. To keep things as simple as possible, evolution is a very slow process and takes enormous (compared with average person’s lifespan) time to shift in a visible direction.
Development of humanity exploded in last 10 000 years, and that’s too fast for evolution to catch up with such rapid changes. We are still biologically and psychologically wired to wild and dangerous environments of prehistorical jungles and savannas.
Most of evolutionary time we had spent in small hunter-gatherer societies made of roughly 50 to 150 people. We are not that different from other apes like bonobos or chimpanzees, with which we share about 98% of DNA. We were able to progress so much thanks to our big brains that allowed us communicate and cooperate.
To understand who we are now, we have to take a closer look at what was the environment that shaped our instincts, adaptations and desires.
